It has been announced today that Barclays Bank and RBS have decided not to appeal against the Judicial Review decision on PPI Complaints, effectively paving the way for millions of pounds in compensation for consumers.

This news follows confirmation from Lloyds Banking Group last week, that they are also not appealing against the decision and have set aside a massive budget for the investigation and compensation of PPI complaints.

In addition to this news, the British Bankers Association (BBA) has also stated they will not be appealing the decision, most likely ruling out any sort of appeal from the banking industry.

The news is a welcome relief to thousands of consumers who are awaiting their complaints to be taken off ‘hold’ and investigated.

Lloyds Banking Group (which includes Lloyds TSB, Halifax, Bank of Scotland) has today announced that they have set a provision of £3.2 Billion to cover the cost of mis-selling PPI to their customers.

Although the BBA are still considering whether or not to appeal the Judicial Review Decision (they have until the 10th May to decide), Lloyds no longer intended to participate in the industry-wide action. Lloyds Chief Executive said “We will not be participating in the BBA review”

As a result of this decision, Strathern Associates will be contacting all clients who have an ongoing complaint against Lloyds TSB, with the intention of getting it resolved as quickly as possible.

NEWS: Latest BBA/FSA Update

As you may be aware at present there is a high court review taking place concerning the British Bankers Association (BBA) and the Financial Services Authority (FSA) over the rules that govern the sale of Payment Protection Insurance (PPI). *

Although the majority of major banks are placing current insurance complaints on hold, some lenders are still handling complaints as normal. In addition to this, the Financial Ombudsman is still accepting complaints relating to the sale of insurance policies.

So, if you have Payment Protection Insurance (PPI) on any loans or credit cards, don’t be put off by the current situation regarding the BBA & FSA. You still have a right to complain if you believe your insurance policy was ‘mis-sold’.

Banks fear new City watchdog rules on payment protection insurance (PPI) complaints could become widespread, their representative body has said.

The British Bankers Association said it feared “illegal and retrospective” rules could be used to cover the sales of other products.

On Friday, it asked the High Court for a judicial review of the new rules.

The Financial Services Authority (FSA) said it would “vigorously contest” the review.

After several years of investigation by the Office of Fair Trading, Competition Commission and the FSA, the regulator announced in August a firm crackdown on the way banks have been dealing with complaints about mis-sold PPI policies.

It stipulated, among other things, that banks and other lenders will have to review old complaints about the mis-selling of PPI.

To this end, it announced new rules that are due to come into force on 1 December.

They could result in more than 2.5 million people being refunded as much as £2.7bn in total.

Consumer groups said PPI policy holders considering a complaint should act fast.

An investigation by the Financial Ombudsman has discovered that banks are rejecting complaints from consumers without even legimately investigating them. The report also shows that 9/10 of those complaints that then get referred to the Financial Ombudsman, are being upheld.

The report also showed:

A shocking 23% surge in complaints about insurance products, including payment
protection insurance

A staggering 95% of Barclays insurance complaints upheld

State-backed Lloyds Banking Group received 22,420 complaints — more than a
quarter of the total complaints received across more than 100,000 businesses

FIve companies — including state-backed Lloyds TsB — received more than 3,000
complaints.
